Do not Spread Yourself too Thin

Once a person has a grasp on Web Presence, the concept “Do not Spread Yourself too Thin” is easy to understand. So, if you haven’t read yesterday’s Understanding Web Presence article, you may want to skim it over before diving into this post.

The basic idea here is that while you are building your Web Presence, you do not want to create more online profiles than you have time and resources to manage.

Creating spaces on all the latest social networks, bookmarking services, technology forums and so on, is a great idea. However, if you don’t have the ability to keep information current on all those websites, you may actually be doing more harm than good.

When using a search engine to find something on the internet, users want the results with up to date and accurate information. Web pages with out of date or inaccurate information, tend to fall to the bottom of the search results.

Now, be careful not to confuse up to date with old. The information, on “old” web pages, isn’t necessarily out of date or irrelevant. Some times “old” web pages can be deemed more relevant, to a search engine, if the information has stood the test of time and is still managed.

Newer and cooler web destinations pop up all the time. When they do, people go rushing to check them out, creating yet another online account, with another username and another password.

Creating yet another online account, isn’t necessarily the problem, though. The problem becomes trying to manage all the information, across all online accounts.

I have thousands of online accounts. Managing the information in all those accounts would take me weeks and realistically, I only use a handful regularly. So the information found in all my other accounts, is getting older by the day.

I have a trick…

I sign up for every newer and cooler web destination, as it becomes available, but I only include basic information, that doesn’t go out of date. This way, if I never log in again, the basic information remains up to date and relevant (I.E. name, business name, website and etc.).

I never add a lot of information until I commit to long-term use of that newer and cooler web destination.

Another trick I use…

I find services which can update multiple online accounts at the same time. For instance, I use the Ping.fm service to push new content from Bamajr.com to Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn and WordPress.

These two tricks, help keep me from spreading myself too thin. Hopefully, they will help you as well.

If you are having difficulty with the difference between Web Presence and SEO, or if you’ve already spread yourself too thin, hire a professional to help.
